How to add screen tones in the Gimp

Installing screentones in the Gimp
This is what the Gimp looks like. This is my Gimp installed with screentones already there. So this is what it should look like after installing the patterns.
sceenshot 2 I'm assuming you already have the Gimp installed. To make patterns show up, you must have the extension with a .pat at the end. For example you can download my patterns that I found here. Or you can make your own pattern in the Gimp! Let me show you how to install a pattern.

  1. Let's say you download BGblack-whitedots.pat. Save it to the Desktop.
  2. Now you must locate the Gimp on your computer. In Windows it's usually in the "My Programs" folder.
  3. Once you locate the Gimp folder, you must open the patterns folder.
  4. Move the file that is on the Desktop to the patterns folder
  5. Open the Gimp (or close and reopen if the Gimp is already open).
  6. Look at the patterns tab, you should see a new one there!
  7. And that's it, it's pretty easy. If you have any questions email me: rachael@kittytreats.org

Making your own pattern in the Gimp.
Say you want to make your own pattern. It's easy, just draw what you want or open picture. Then rename it to a .pat file as you see in this screenshot.
Then you just repeat the step where you copy the file in the patterns folder.
Now you can click on refresh to make new pattern show up! Remember the pattern's file name must have the .pat at the end to show up!!!
Here's a quickie on how to use your new pattern! Select the magic wand, then select the bucket to fill. Make sure to select the pattern radio button once you select the bucket. Then select your new pattern!

Help

Hello, I was trying to learn how to do tones on gimp and happened to find your page. I find that you're website
is very interesting, but the links to the toning downloads that you have provided do not work. So I looked up for another website and found http://shounenaigo.comicgenesis.com/tone/ . Then I thought that If I chose one of the tones in this website, like this one for example, http://shounenaigo.comicgenesis.com/tone/d-pixed/8.gif , and saved it as .pat at the end in the gimps pattern folder. But the Icon picture that it showed when I saved it onto the patterns folder only showed a picture of the gimp mascot dog guy (it didn't show the foot like it your examples.) I just thought that maybe mine was different from yours so I continued to go on. But, when I clicked the pattern box I couldn't find the pattern that I had saved. Can you please help me? Sorry for my bad writing, but I tried to make it as good as possible.

Replying to your Help

Hello Gabe! Sorry about the link, here's the direct link again to the patterns: http://www.kittytreats.org/screentones/

I forgot to renew my domain so maybe that's why it's not working? With the icons, it will look different since we have different versions of OS. The foot that you see on my screen shots are different because I"m using a Desktop called Gnome. You seeing the Mascot dog is great.

I went ahead and downloaded the 8.gif file that you were trying to use. I opened the file in the gimp, then saved it as a .pat file into the location in the screen shot. With the Gimp being open, you can select refresh. In the screen shot you can see the pattern at the top row, 3rd from the left titled 8. It seemed to work for me in Windows 7. Check out the screen shot that I created.

Hope that helps!

I don't have the patterns folder.

I use a Mac, and the GIMP program I have doesn't have a file directory specifically for Mac, so I don't have the patterns folder. Is there some way around this problem?

where is the patterns folder

where is the patterns folder located?

Hello thatguy,

Find out where the gimp folder is installed on your computer. You can also see what I mean in the screenshot below. It won't look exactly like this on your computer. If you don't see a pattern fold inside the gimp folder. Create one and then you can start adding the patterns to it. Hope that helps!

.pat

Admin to www.kittytreats.org

Hi P1! The extension is part of file name. For example if you have the files 1.gif and 2.gif The extension means the .gif part. Microsoft Word uses .doc extension. Photoshop uses .psd extension.

Anyways I have a link on this tuturial where you can download the .pat files. You move those files into the Gimp folder. Inside the gimp folder, there should be a pattern folder. Move all the .pat files into the pattern folder.

If you have your own pattern, just go to "save as" and select .pat.

Hope that helps!

Thank you, this is really
